Documenting Chinatown by Jonathan Desmond Photography

Jonathan Desmond’s “Documenting Chinatown” project is the result of five years capturing real, everyday moments in the shops and streets of the historic Vancouver neighbourhood. During this time, Jonathan has witnessed the effects of progress and gentrification, but also the determination and dedication from residents and youth groups in the community who are passionate about protecting the history and culture of Chinatown. By sharing his photographs in the courtyard, Jonathan hopes to celebrate the heritage and culture of Chinatown, invite discussions about the neighbourhood, and, in his own words, encourage people to see Chinatown as “not just another tourist spot, but also a living breathing community with colourful characters and vibrant personality.”
